Juniors – why start the college search now? There are several reasons why high school juniors should start exploring colleges and developing an approach toward creating a very strong application to selective colleges. Here is one, courtesy of Stephanie Kennedy, an IECA colleague and founder of Kennedy Educational Services:
You Have Only Three Days Left For College Visits Call me crazy, but consider this: If you’re a very involved student (academics, athletics, music, debate, etc.), your every weekend is packed with activities, competitions and homework. I know you don’t want to miss any AP classes! So, that leaves 3 possible time slots to visit colleges: MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, and Spring Break. After that, it’s summer! What good is it to visit colleges in the summer when there are no students or faculty to interview?
Consider also that the challenges of college admissions today often create stress for students and their families. One good way to minimize the stress is to start as early as possible, avoiding a big crunch in senior year. For juniors that means starting right now. Sophomores would also benefit from visiting local colleges and comparing their features, developing a standardized test timeline and thinking about courses for junior year.
